In India, our love for vibrant gardens runs deep. As winter approaches, my goal is to fill my garden with a burst of colorful blossoms by January and February. To get started without breaking the bank, I found an affordable multi-seed pack on Flipkart and ordered it last week.
I began sowing the winter-ready seeds this past Thursday. Through this blog, I’ll be documenting the growth step-by-step with a chronological timeline. Whether you are a passionate plant enthusiast or a biology/gardening student, I hope this real-time guide offers practical insights into winter propagation!
1. Unboxing & Seed Selection
Here is the full variety of seeds included in the parcel:
Pansy, Phlox, Petunia, Daisy, Marigold, Verbena, Dianthus, Gazania, Ice Plant, Calendula, Coreopsis, Balsam, Zinnia, Chrysanthemum, Sunflower, and Tithonia.
Crucial Tip: Sowing in the Right Season
Just as you wouldn't expect winter crops like Peas (Matar), Cauliflower (Phool Gobhi), Cabbage (Patta Gobhi), Carrots (Gajar), or Turnips (Shalgam) to thrive in peak summer heat, flower seeds are equally sensitive to season and temperature.
Before sowing, I carefully sorted the seeds:
-
Saved for Spring/Summer (Feb–March): Zinnia, Sunflower, and Tithonia preferred the warm spring transition, so I set them aside.
-
Saved for Monsoon (June): Balsam performs best during early rains, so these were kept for later.
-
Selected for Winter: The remaining winter-hardy seeds were chosen for immediate sowing.
2. Soil Preparation & Mix Recipe
To ensure healthy root aeration and good drainage, I prepared a customized soil mixture:
-
50% Garden Soil
-
30% Wood Husk / Crushed Decaying Leaves (Organic matter)
-
20% Sand
Note: Mix all three components thoroughly to create an even texture before potting.
3. Container Setup, Sowing & Labelling
Thermocol Containers: I distributed the soil mixture into 12 thermocol containers.Important: Ensure you poke drainage holes at the bottom of every container. Excess stagnant water can rot the seeds before they germinate.
4. Germination & Growth Timeline
8th October: Seed Sorting & Sowing Day
-
Filtered out summer and monsoon species.
-
Prepared soil mix, filled the 12 thermocol containers, labeled them, and sowed the winter species.
10th October: First Signs of Life
-
Chrysanthemum: 2 seeds sprouted/germinated!
-
Daisy: 1 seed germinated.
11th October: Steady Progress
-
Chrysanthemum: 9 seedlings reached the early 2-leaf stage.
-
Calendula: 1 seed germinated.
-
Daisy: 1 seed sprouted further.
-
Marigold: 1 seed sprouted further.
12th October: Early True Leaves Appearing
-
Chrysanthemum: 9 healthy seedlings staying strong at the 2-leaf stage.
-
Calendula: 1 strong seedling at the 2-leaf stage.
-
Marigold: 1 strong seedling at the 2-leaf stage.
-
Daisy: 7 active seedlings showing varied stages:
-
1 larger seedling (2-leaf stage)
3 mini seedlings
-
3 tiny emerging sprouts
-
-
Ice Plant: 1 mini seedling emerging (tiny 2-leaf stage).
What’s Next?
I will continue updating this blog post with regular status logs, photos, and growth tracking as these seedlings develop true leaves and move toward repotting.
